Freshly Harvested!

Hand-harvesting items for your land hermit crabs is a great way to give them organic, natural foods for free! It's great to connect back to nature and take a long hike while getting some delicious delectables for your crabs.

Oak leaves, maple leaves, basswood leaves, swordfern, cattail... there are so many possibilities! Today, I harvested some oak, maple, and moss for the crabs and for my store. It was a great day!

Crabby New Year 2010!

Crabby New Year, everyone! I can't believe it's 2010 already.

I hope everyone had a great year and I know I'm looking forward to another year of crabbing. More adventures and more discovery!

I resolve to post more often on here during school and not just when it's summer!

Crabby by Definition

tanktrashing [tangk-trash-ing] (n., v.) · the act of a hermit crab, specifically Coenobita compressus, ruining the tank. Some examples of trashing includes digging large mashes, turning over dishes, and knocking everything over.

Sentence Examples:

(v.) Sometimes my Ecuadorians make me mad! While it is fun to watch them trashing the tank, I hate cleaning up after them!

(n.) I don't mind the crab's tanktrashing because I make my little kids clean up after them anyways.

Sweet 16

Hey, everyone.

My sixteenth birthday is coming up soon (March 16th), and instead of getting a brand new car, I'm pretty sure that I want a brand new tank for the land hermit crabs (and a few more crabs, of course!).

I am hoping to get a new 55 gallon aquarium with all of the good toppings. I'm hoping to be able to install custom pools with filters so I won't have to change the water so frequently.

Hopefully, I will be able to get this for my birthday!

The Story Behind the Name

I just realized today while browsing my blog (yes, I am a geek who enjoys reading his own blog), that I never really mentioned why this blog is named Kilimanjaro's Hermits. I figured that I probably should at least dedicate one blog post to the namesake!

In case you didn't know, or you've been trapped in a cellar for your entire life, Kilimanjaro comes from the roof of Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro. It's a pretty big mountain. Sadly, the snowy rooftop is melting away rapidly due to global warming. It's expected that in two decades, the entire roof will bear no snow. This could have potentially dangerous effects on weather patterns.

Anyway, I've always chosen exotic or unusual crab names for my land hermit crabs. I figure that it should be no different for my first Ecuadorian! He was dubbed Kilimanjaro, and I liked the name so much, I changed my username on the HCA from chicofeo1993 (ugly boy) to Kilimanjaro. Now, I am widely known on that forum as "Kili".

Anyway, this name has kind of stuck since my first Ecuadorian proudly walked around with the name of a giant mountain. Although my first Ecuadorian passed away due to molting troubles, he still has a lasting memory both in my heart and throughout the cyberspace world (okay, maybe not the entire cyberspace world, but the land hermit crab community!).
