Playsand can work, but is made from crushed rocks, whereas a natural sand that is oolitic (rounded grains) is a much better option for the long term. I just recently switched to CaribSea Aragonite sand (around $20 for a 25 pound bag) and the crabs LOVE it - heck, it's soft when I stick my hand in it!
